Charkhi — Spool for Kite Thread

Wound thread needs somewhere to live. In Hindi it’s Charkhi, in Gujarati Firki, in Bengali Latai — same tool, different name.

What a charkhi does

A charkhi is a spool, usually circular or cylindrical with a handle, used to wind and control your kite line. It’s essential for kite flying anywhere winds are long, strong and continuous enough for high-altitude flying.

  • Easy handling — light enough that your hands don’t tire holding it through a long flying session.
  • Prevents tangling — holds the line securely while you fly.
  • Fast winding — a heavier charkhi builds momentum, so with practice you can wind thread back in quickly after a cut, without using your fingers.

Charkhis come in plastic, wood and metal, in sizes matched to the length and thickness of thread they’ll carry — some with detachable handles. Ours are made of wood by expert craftsmen in Jaipur, in capacities from 1 reel up to 12 reels.
