Kite Manja — Patang Manja
What Manja is, how it’s made, and how to choose the right cord strength for your kite.
What is kite Manja?
Kite Manja is traditionally handmade using cotton thread coated with abrasive material — a fine mix of glass powder, glue and colour, whose exact recipe each maker guards closely. It’s made across India, Pakistan and other countries with a kite-fighting tradition, by makers known in the community as Ustad.
Different cord counts use different thread strengths. For safety, tournaments require 6-cord thread; during festival season, 9-cord and 12-cord Manja are also common among recreational flyers.
Which cord strength should I use?
| Cord | Best for |
|---|---|
| 4 cord | Small and medium kites, up to Pauni Patang |
| 6 cord | Medium and Pauni Patang; bigger kites too in lower wind |
| 9 cord | Medium to bigger kites, and higher wind speeds |
| 12 cord | All kite sizes, especially bigger kites in high wind, with no worry of the thread snapping |
6-cord is the most popular Manja in India — strong enough to fly comfortably, without the hazard of a much stronger line. It’s also the only cord allowed in Indian kite-fighting tournaments, traditionally made from Vardhman thread article number 123, hence the name 123 Manja.
What decides the price?
Manja pricing follows the thread: 6-cord is cheaper than 9-cord, which is cheaper than 12-cord, and then brand and quality tier add further spread. Making Manja is entirely manual — winding thread onto poles, coating it, drying it, then rolling it onto a charkhi — and makers with a reputation for quality and honesty can charge a premium over lesser-known ones.
A note on safety
- Use a thread suited to your kite and skill level — an unnecessarily strong line can hurt if it tangles.
- Stay aware of your surroundings, and never fly near power lines or other hazards.
- Keep an eye on your kite at all times, and avoid flying in high wind or rain.
